History · Dutch Emigration
In Progress
The Vessels and People of the Dutch Exodus. A companion to The Netherlands and the Great Exodus: 1946–1960, exploring the ships and the journeys of the families they carried overseas.
My parents came from Holland. In this photograph, I’m sitting at the end of a street in Amsterdam, thinking about their lives there and what led so many Dutch people to leave for Canada, the United States, Australia, and elsewhere to begin again.
I found Holland and Amsterdam beautiful. Sitting there, I began considering a book about that history and the people behind it. It was a quiet moment that inspired me to continue writing.
