The Demise of Nations
How nations dismantle themselves from within, and why military defeat is often only the final event in a much longer internal decline.
About the book
What makes a nation vulnerable before the enemy arrives?
History often records the army that conquered a nation, the battle that broke its defences, or the ruler who surrendered its territory. The Demise of Nations asks a different question: what had already happened inside that nation to make its defeat possible?
Through historical case studies across different eras and political systems, the book will trace how legitimate grievances, ideological extremes, institutional erosion, economic deterioration, and the loss of shared national purpose can gradually remove a people’s ability to correct their government peacefully. It will examine left- and right-wing authoritarianism by the same standard, searching for the last reversible moment before internal decline becomes national crisis.
